Our
Mission
The mission of the
Department of Forest Management at the University of Maine is to provide
excellence in education, research, and public service that promotes the
understanding, efficient use, and sustainable management of forest resources
for the well-being of Maine, the United States, and the world.
Our
Goals
-
Offer undergraduate
educational programs that 1) contain a core of humanities and sciences
instruction appropriate to helping a graduate lead a productive existence
in the modern world, 2) include technical skills needed for a a graduate
to be of immediate usefulness to an employer, and 3) provide professional
knowledge, reasoning ability, and communications skills on which a graduate
can build throughout his or her career.

Offer undergraduate
education in Forestry, Forest Operations Science, Recreation, Parks, &
Tourism, and Wood Science & Technology that meets the contemporary
and anticipated needs of Maine's forestland owners, forest-based recreational
services providers, and wood products industries, but that also enables
our graduates to compete successfully for entry-level employment in these
professions throughout the world.

Develop a mechanism
for ensuring that the students in each of our baccalaureate programs have
an understanding of and appreciation for the challenges and opportunities
that will be faced by graduates from all of our programs.

Conduct programs of
research that address contemporary forest-resource-based needs of Maine,
the Nation, and the World, but that also are creative and imaginative enough
to anticipate results of the long-term processes that are characteristic
of forest-dependent systems.

Attain the level of
State, national, and international recognition of our programs of instruction
and research that is necessary to attract students who are likely to be
successful in their careers and to attract the funding that is necessary
to research.

To serve both the continuing-education
needs of forest resources professional, and to provide the scientists that
are needed by both the private and public sectors, offer both professional
and research-oriented programs of graduate education that are clearly identified
with disciplinary specialties.

Clearly define the pubic
service needs of Maine that can best be served by our Department and provide
specific mechanisms for meeting those needs on a continuing basis.
