I.     The naming convention for base files, .ssf or .exe, is as follows:

Mymmddhh.ssf or Mymmddhh.exe
"M" = The base station prefix.
y = One digit year.
mm = Two digit month.
dd = Two digit day.
hh = Two digit hour ("00" to "23").
(For example, the file created at 2pm on May 14, 1998, would be "M8051418.ssf".)

II.     Base files from this station are available in four different ways.

1.     From the Web, previous 12 months of data.
Some remote (not on campus) users may find they have trouble loading the page: transfer of data has stopped--e.g. the rate stops at 506K, but the page hasn't yet loaded. If this is the case, hit the browser's "Stop" button to cease loading the page. This is a problem that is particular to the type of connection being used in accessing the page; It does not affect one's access to or acquisition of the data.

Also, the list of files seems to be ordered randomly by Internet Explorer, and by the AOL browser. These problems will be addressed soon.

These files are self-extracting zip files (.exe).

The data is organized into subdirectories by month. The naming convention for the subdirectories is as follows:

"M" = The basefile prefix;
yyyy = Four digit year;
mm = Two digit month
(For example, files from January of this year would be in "M199801")
To begin downloading base files, click on the name of the file you want with the left mouse button; then designate a destination for the file.
2.     From FTP, current 30 days;
FTP downloading is often faster than web downloading. To FTP using WS-FTP, use the following parameters.
Host Name: GPS-Umaine.umenfa.maine.edu
Host type: Automatic detect
User ID: anonymous
Password: your email address
The Host Name is case sensitive.
The files are ".ssf" format.

Do not worry about the 501 Permission denied and !DoDirList failed 0 error messages.

To download files using "WS-FTP" click on the left arrow in the middle of the screen then type in the full name of the file you wish to down load. Please see the file-naming conventions detailed above.

To acquire WS-FTP, please visit Top 50 Winsock Applications.

3. From the Bulletin Board, data from previous 30 days.
Contact Louis for information.
4. Data older than one year will be archived on CD, and will be available on request.
