Duties / Significant Wildlife Habitat / Deer Wintering Areas / Endangered or Threatened Species

• Search and rescue for outdoor recreationists
• Law enforcement of fish and game regulations by game wardens; including trespassing and abuse of property by hunters and fishers
• Identification of significant wildlife habitat (see below)

• Deer wintering areas (see below)
• Deer travel corridors
• Waterfowl and wading bird habitat
• Critical spawning and nesting areas for Atlantic salmon
• Shorebird nesting, feeding, and staging areas
• Habitat of state or federal threatened or endangered species (see below)

Deer Wintering Areas identified based on:

* IF&W will notify local officials and owners of these areas

• Observation by IF&W personnel
• Deer tracks
• Evidence of current or past deer browsing
• Deer pellet piles
• Deer bedding sites

To be categorized as endangered or threatened by the State of Maine, species must have one of the following:

*The State my acquire, propagate, trap, transplant, and perform a regulated taking as a last resort.

• Present or threatened destruction, modification, or curtailment of its habitat or range
• Over-utilization for commercial, sporting, scientific, educational, or other purposes
• Disease or predation
• Inadequacy of existing regulations
• Other natural or man-made factors affecting its continued existence in the state
