Harvest Reports
Prior to harvest, the landowner or designated agent needs to send a notification form to the Bureau of Forestry (see below). If the harvest is in an unorganized township or a plantation, LURC is to be notified. The Bureau will then send the form back to the landowner. During harvest, the form needs to be shown to law enforcement officers requesting to see it (county, municipal, forest rangers, state field foresters, wardens). The form is valid for two years and only for that specific harvest.
*Notification is not necessary if harvesting does not result in the sale of commercial products, meaning any precommercial activities like thinning and weeding. Precommercial silvicultural activities are to be reported to the Maine Forest Service if done on more than 10 acres. Use the harvest reporting form described below.
Initial notification includes the following:
LURC: LURC divides unorganized townships and plantations into protection (significant natural areas), management (forestry and agriculture), and development districts (intensive use); each with different harvesting restrictions. Call 1-800-452-8711 to find out what district your parcel is in. LURC has specific restrictions on harvesting in areas above 2700' in elevation and harvesting in shoreland zones. Please read the page on shoreland zoning to find the shoreland restrictions. (Land Use Handbook 1995)
After harvest or precommercial silvicultural activities, the landowner or designated agent needs to send a harvest report to the Bureau of Forestry. For lump-sum sales, the purchaser is responsible for submitting the report. If precommercial silvicultural practices have been performed on more than 10 acres in any year, these practices also need to be reported. Reports shall consist of:
