Slash and
Burning
Slash
- Public highway: Keep out
of the right-of-way and within 50' of the shoulder of the
right-of-way
- Railroads and utility
lines: Keep out right-of-way and within 25' of side of
right-of-way
- Ownership boundary:
Adjoining owners and the Maine Forest Service (MFS) can ask for
slash to be removed within 25' of a boundary line if slash
constitutes a fire hazard
- By dwelling houses: The
MFS can request removal of slash within 100' of occupied
buildings, if slash is considered a hazard
- All slash requiring removal shall be either chipped or
scattered within 30 days of notification or cutting
- For plantations and unorganized townships, no slash in streams
below the point that drains more than 300 acres. See

Burning
- No person may kindle or use an out-of-door fire unless a
permit has been obtained from the Maine Forest Service or town
forest fire warden. This includes burning slash and brush. The
exemptions are portable stoves, grills, fireplaces, and
recreational fires when the ground is covered by snow. The
conditions of the permit must be followed.
