Stands
A stand is a area of forest with similarities that allow it to be
managed as a single unit. Similarities include:
- Species
- Hardwood
- Softwood
- Mixedwood
- Size
- Diameter at 4.5' above the ground known as the Diameter at Breast Height (DBH)
- Seedling (<1")
- Sapling (1-6")
- Pole (6-12")
- Small Sawtimber (12-21")
- Large Sawtimber (>21")
- Height
- Even-aged: One canopy layer of similar heights
- Two-aged: Two dominant canopy layers
- Uneven-aged: Three or more dominant canopy layers
intermixed
- Density: Measured in
square feet of basal area per acre. If you were to cut all of the
trees at 4.5 feet high and then measure the cross-sectional area
of each of the stumps, the sum of those areas is the basal area.
Basal area can be calculated from DBH.
