Foresters
These foresters provide assistance in:
- Obtaining and explaining required forms for
harvest notification and reporting
- Obtaining information to comply with environmental standards
- Following up with landowners after harvest notification
- Reviewing landowner forest management plans
- Explaining forest management options
- Including timber, soil conservation, insects and diseases,
recreation, and wildlife
- Promoting involvement of grants and
incentive programs
- Disseminating educational material
- Developing comprehensive plans for municipalities
- Other duties as the director prescribes
Field foresters are limited to 3 site visits per landowner over a
5 year period, except to administer federal programs(Field
1994)

Forest Rangers in Maine
Rangers have the following responsibilities:
- On-site authority and responsibility for the control of forest
fires
- Fire safety inspections at wood harvesting operations
- Investigate causes of forest fires
- Forest fire prevention, education, and training
- Enforce all laws relating to private forests,
Land Use
Regulation Commission regulations and permits, and forests
under jurisdiction of the Bureau of Public Lands
- Other duties as director prescribes
- Rangers have the right to access all lands within the State to
carry out their duties. They have the law enforcement powers of a
sheriff.

Maine Forest
Service Insect and Disease
Control
This program has the following duties:
- Statewide surveillance of insects, diseases, and abiotic
agents that are potentially injurious to the forest
- Provide information and assistance about the identification
and control of forest insects and diseases
- Conduct and supervise authorized control programs of forest
insects and diseases
- Assist in enforcement of federal and state quarantine laws
- Conduct applied research on the management of forest insects,
diseases, and abiotic agents
- Maintain up to date information on the injurious impacts of
forest insects, diseases, and abiotic agents
- With landowner notification, the employees of this program may
go on any land to survey for insects, diseases, and abiotic agents
that pose danger to the trees of Maine.
