descriptions are often poor because they reference trees and
stumps that are gone or roads and brooks that have changed course.
Boundary descriptions should be updated to reflect current
conditions. Use a licensed surveyor to update deeds and to ensure
that only permanent features are referenced. Permanent features
include granite posts, iron stakes, and metal pipes that are at
least 3' in the ground. Each corner of the property should have
such a marker. In between each corner marker, the boundary lines
should be kept clear of brush and blazed. A blaze is made by
chopping a 5" square section of the bark down to live wood. After
drying, the cut is painted a bright color with a long lasting
paint. Blazed trees should be vigorous and at least 4" in
diameter. Blazes should be made every 20 to 30 feet at eye level
so that they can be easily seen when coming from both directions.
